The fort town of Vizianagaram was in news recently when a record quantity of 544 tonnes of mangoes were loaded into the kisan rail there in a single day for transport to Adarsh Nagar in New Delhi. The rare feat even caught the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The kisan rail is transporting hundreds of tonnes of mangoes from Vizianagaram in South India to New Delhi. The farmers are now able to send their produce to remote parts of the country at a low cost,” said the Prime Minister during his Mann Ki Baat, which was broadcast on Sunday.
Over 6,000 tonnes of mangoes were transported till date from the Waltair Division ever since the first kisan rail with mango load chugged out as Vizianagaram its nodal point. Since then, the recent one was the ever highest record parcel loading in a single day in the history of ECoR.
Despite the pandemic situation, the division has been running kisan special trains to help the farm sector by providing hassle-free transport to the agriculture produce.
The division launched kisan special trains from Vizianagaram last month for transportation of mangoes and till now it operated 19 trains.
To encourage farmers to utilise the services of kisan rails, the Central government has offered 50 per cent subsidy on freight charges for transportation of fruits and vegetables. The facility came into effect last year.
